What's Up With Johnny Depp's 'Dark Shadows' Look?

Depp wears heavy white makeup and exaggerated sideburns to play Collins, a 200-year-old vampire awakened during an attempted jewel theft in the Collins family mausoleum by Willie Loomis (Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley), and, frankly, the character appears to more closely resembles Depp's takes on Willy Wonka or the Mad Hatter than the mysterious, sexy vampire introduced on the cult classic series. The series remains one of my favorite guilty pleasures. It aired originally from 1966-71 on ABC but was brought back to life in reruns in the early '90s by the SyFy Channel. Sure, it's kind of a weird thing for a 10-year-old boy to be into, but I loved every second of the melodrama. I was sucked in by the over-the-top tales of vampires, witches and time travel and rejoiced when NBC brought the show back for a short-lived remake that featured a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt. So I've been excited about this movie since the moment Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the series in 2007 and Burton announced he would direct. Burton is at his best when his material runs Gothic and "Shadows" looked like the perfect return-to-form vehicle for the director. His recent films have been his biggest box office hits "Alice in Wonderland" topped $1 billion in worldwide grosses but few would argue they are his best films. With its dark, atmospheric New England setting and myriad mysterious characters, "Shadows" should have more in common with Sleepy Hollow or Burton's "Batman" films than it does his candy-colored "Alice." But Depp's makeup and costuming make it seem like the director has decided to take his "Shadows" down the rabbit hole. In these images, Depp looks like a cartoon, which is what it is, but its not Barnabus Collins. He's not an eccentric weirdo; he's a troubled man, cursed to eternal life by jealous witch Angelique (Eva Green), who started the series' run as a frightening figure and evolved into a complex sort of hero that fights to save the Collins family from falling apart while battling his feelings for his lost love Josette and her doppelganger Victoria Winters (newcomer Bella Heathcote). He's not the Mad Hatter with fangs. Another issue I have with Depp's makeup and styling is that several key plots from the series hinged on women being attracted to Barnabus in a major way. Barnabus was, after all, turned into a vamp when he ended his affair with the character played by Green, who is perhaps one of the most gorgeous women on earth. He also has a complex-but-obvious chemistry and attraction to young and beautiful Victoria Winters. It's not hard to imagine women being attracted to Johnny Depp. It is, however, difficult to imagine women being overwhelmed by their attraction to whatever Depp is playing in these shots. In short, Barnabus is meant to be a darkly alluring figure in the vein of Tom Cruise in "Interview with the Vampire" and other classic cinema vamps, not a vividly white vamp reminiscent of something out of "Twilight." I'm still excited for the film and hope my gut response to Depp's styling is wrong. Perhaps he's overdone because of the lighting Burton is using for a specific scene, or maybe it won't come off as over-the-top in the context of the film. But this flick already had so much going for it the supporting ensemble is perfectly cast, from Green and Haley to Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloe Moretz that it just didn't need this. It's just worrisome because much of the audiences' emotional connection to the show hinged on sympathizing with its lead vampire, and while Depp is a great actor, no amount of emoting is going to make me connect to the undead cartoon character in these images. Chuck Lorre Two and a Half Men creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre is not necessarily a shy guy. But when it comes to the recent events surrounding Two and a Half Men, Lorre has remained silent - until now. Timed to TV Guide Magazine's Fall Preview issue, which features the first sit-down interview with new Two and a Half Men castmates Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones, Lorre finally agreed to discuss why he decided to keep Two and a Half Men going after star Charlie Sheen was fired. He's also honest in admitting that Kutcher wasn't his first choice for the gig - which he originally envisioned in a whole different way. Exclusive: Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones on the New Two and a Half Men Lorre found himself thrust into the spotlight earlier this year when Sheen, struggling with addiction issues, agreed to take a break from the show (which shut down production). But just as Sheen was about to go back to work, the star went public and began trashing CBS and Men producer Warner Bros. TV. Sheen saved the most incendiary vitriol for Lorre, even using terms that many construed as anti-Semitic against his boss. (When the studio and network decided that Sheen was no longer fit to perform, the actor was then fired.) Lorre decided not to publicly respond to Sheen's taunts, other than subtly via his production company vanity cards, which run at the end of his three shows (Men, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly). In one card, he admitted to growing "thicker skin" after recent events. In another, he told a parable of a sea turtle and a wolf that was clearly an allegory for his relationship with Sheen. Because of ongoing litigation - Sheen has sued Lorre, the studio and network over his firing, which has gone to arbitration - Lorre still isn't talking about the events or the aftermath of Sheen's implosion. (Insiders say Lorre was invited to participate, or at least attend, Comedy Central's Roast of Charlie Sheen this past weekend but he opted not to.) But he's now ready to talk about the show again. That includes the hiring of Kutcher, which was first suggested by CBS. Says Cryer: "When Ashton's name was first mentioned, Chuck really couldn't get a handle on how to work him into this show. He was sort of reaching out saying, OK what do you think? And I thought, well, that's a different show. I don't know how you do it either, Chuck." Those worries evaporated once Kutcher and Lorre sat down to hash out ideas. Before coming up with Walden Schmidt, "we played with a lot of very bizarre notions for what the character could be," Kutcher says. "I thought we settled on something, and then found out it was completely different from what we talked about but equally interesting... There was an offer that day." Cryer remembers talking to Lorre after that meeting: "He was elated. He was saying, 'I think I got it.'" Now, with five episodes in the can, Two and a Half Men is already back to being a well-oiled machine. A sense of newness, even as Men enters its ninth season, has given the aging sitcom a fresh coat of paint on and off the set. TV Guide Magazine:From what I understand, the plan for Hugh Grant (who was originally approached for the job) would have pretty much kept the same character dynamic that has been in place on the show. But with Ashton, you guys have come up with a whole new kind of relationship. As Jon Cryer says, the show has been somewhat flipped: Alan is now a mentor of sorts to the needy Walden. How did you come up with the character? And talk about putting a new twist on the show.Lorre: I'd seen Ashton play an emotionally wounded character in a few films and it was really powerful - a handsome leading man, with big comedy chops, capable of showing his vulnerabilities. I thought if we could capture that right out of the gate we'd be on our way to creating a really interesting, three-dimensional character. TV Guide Magazine: Does this give a whole new shot in the arm to the show? How many more years can you imagine Two and a Half Men running?Lorre: It feels like the best of both worlds: a well-developed series and a brand new one at the same time. How long? I don't have a clue. I just know I love what we're doing and hope people feel the same way. TV Guide Magazine: Without giving away the storyline, it's clear you guys "go there" in the first episode (in which Sheen's character is killed off). What can you say about it, is it simply about keeping true to the show's reputation for outrageous humor?Lorre: Like I said, it's still a show that veers into the vaguely unacceptable. Nick Jonas To Replace Daniel Radcliffe On Broadway

FIRST PUBLISHED: September 7, 2011 2:14 PM EDT NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Producers looking for someone to replace Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway have landed their prize a Jonas. Nick Jonas will step into the role of J. Pierrepont Finch next year in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He begins Jan. 24 and will play the role until July 1. Darren Criss of Foxs hit show Glee will make his Broadway debut in the role for three weeks starting Jan. 3 until Jan. 22. Radcliffes final performance is set for Jan. 1. For Jonas, the youngest of the three heartthrob siblings, it will be his fifth appearance in a Broadway show.
